Leaving It Behind (Genesis 12)

Imagine you are stranded on a deserted island. You can only have two of the following items, which will you choose? Explain why.
  • a spear
  • extra clothes
  • a box of old newspapers
  • 10 cans of spam
  • an axe
  • 100 feet of rope
  • a book of matches
How did you decide which things you didn't need?

What are some thing in your present life that you have or want but probably don't need?

Read Genesis 12:1-4. Which part of these verses is most interesting to you?

In your opinion, which of God's instructions to Abram were most difficult to obey? Why?

Why do you think God wanted Abram to leave his country? Why do you think God didn't tell Abram where to go right away? What do you think God wanted Abram to learn?

Of all the promises God made in these verses, which do you think meant the most to Abram? Why?

What promises from God mean the most to you? Why?

If God were to ask you to leave something, what do you think he would ask you to leave or give up? Why did you choose that? Are you willing to give it up? Why or why not?

Having talked about this passage, what do you believe you need to do this week in order to be obedient to God? How can this group help you?
